I started last week on Wednesday to bring my kids into the childcare and then bringing them home. I have now started to practise in my own life the true knowledge worker working in the virtual environment.
The typical day could be as follows:
06:20 Waking up, putting the clothes on and turning on the PC at home using ADSL with corporate VPN
06:30 Starting to browse the emails
07:30 Waking up the children or let them wake whenever they will wake and continuing to browse the emails
07:45 Closing the PC and getting the children prepared for the childcare
08:15 Starting to drive towards the childcare and dropping them there
08:45 Driving to the office in which you will have the face-to-face meeting later on during the day. You can complete the virtual ones at that office earlier or later.
10:00 Virtual training to Asia or Europe covering 5 countries for 1,5 hours
11:30 Lunch
12:00 Face-to-face meeting at the office
14:30 Packing up PC at the office and continuing via telephone while driving to the childcare, as the meeting was delayed. Or alternatively calling/receiving some telephone calls
15:00 Returning home with the children. Answering telephone calls etc.
15:30 Putting the PC ready at home and getting the children to feel ok at home
15:50 Starting the children’s favorite video
16:00 Starting virtual training/meeting for US
16:30 My wife returns from her work, to take care of the children
17:30 Meeting ends and you are immediately with all of your family.
During the past week I have learnt to respect your children sleeping not to wake them unless it is absolutely necessary in the morning. I have learnt that there are countless opportunities to arrange your virtual work. Travelling means often only travelling between near-by offices max 45 minutes. I feel confortable to balance my working and private lifes. I truly recommend this to everybody.
